ESSENTIAL OIL INTRODUCTION
Perfume materials of one type or another are used in almost
all cosmetics. The perfume is a significant part of many other products, as
creams, lotions, face and bath powders and shaving creams. It plays a minor
role in other cosmetics, such as face rogue, depilatories and hairwaving
lotions. It is usually omitted in a few cosmetics such as eye make-up nail
products etc.
A cosmetic may be perfumed conceivably with a single raw
material or with a mixture of two or more materials. The perfume compounding
does not follow the physical or chemical rules or properties of the materials.
Generally, the perfume chooses a basic material for a particular perfume
compound and this basic material is modified with a few other materials,
usually belonging to the same odour group. Usually a perfume oil contains at
least a dozen materials, but it may contain as many as 200 or more materials.
The amount of perfume oil needed for a cosmetic,
preparation, is governed by one`s allowed cost, the nature of the perfume itself
and the effect desired in the finished products.
